Karen O And The Kids – Where The Wild Things Are SoundtrackKaren O And The Kids – Where The Wild Things Are Soundtrack

The soundtrack to December's most anticipated film, has been left to the front of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Karen O, and some kids, apparently.

But don't worry – it isn't an album full of whacky nonsense and screaming – this soundtrack is actually a real gem. The album opens with the magical /Igloo/ which is led by a vocal melody (no words, just a melody) and is slowly joined by gentle acoustic guitars and twinkling percussive instruments. It's a thing of beauty, and works its way effortlessly into /All Is Love/, which turns from Sigur Ros to Arcade Fire and ends up in a delightful song, with the same kind of feel-good vibes as that of the main song from Ice Age. Karen O sings over a backing choir of children and there are frequent points along the song where everyone is just shouting “woo!” or something. It's fantastic. And as it plays, you can see the movie unravelling in your head.

/Capsize/ is a darker story altogether, slightly more Yeah Yeah Yeahs and a lot more rocky.

Although few of the later tracks ever return to the vibes of /All Is Love /(but some do!), they're all great tracks. From the slow soothing ballad /Hideaway/, to the Four Tet meets Radiohead /Animal/, we've got a winner.

For those of you wondered what Yeah Yeah Yeahs might sound like if Karen O had less sugar in her system, this is a glimpse of what might have been. Regardless of its role within the moving picture, this is a soundtrack you can listen to without any images. And I like it, more than I thought I would.
